Continuing an ongoing series that began exactly one year ago, the ICBIE is offering another cycle of films to the local community, free of charge. Given the fact that the whole low city of Salvador (cidade baixa) has no cinema whatsoever, and many residents can’t afford bus fares into the city center, let alone purchase expensive tickets for a night at the movies, the utility of this initiative is clear.
Every Wednesday evening from now until the 10th of September, a cycle of major international films will be shown at 7 PM at the ICBIE. Starting on September 17th, a new cycle of Italian cinema (presented in Italian with Portuguese subtitles) will be required viewing for our Italian language students.
The present cycle is entitled Fahrenheit, because it begins with the 1966 classic Fahrenheit 451 by François Truffaut, and ends (appropriately, on September 10th) with Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11. Sandwiched in between are, in order, City Lights, The DaVinci Code, Romeo & Juliette and Blade Runner. The cidade baixa never had it so good!
