During the evening of Thursday, February 20th, the ICBIE hosted a rollicking and animated get-together, thanks to a proposal made by Loona and her group of English students. Called “A Rua é Nossa,” it brought together students from the English course, a few language teachers, ICBIE volunteers, students from the capoeira class and friends and neighbors who live nearby, in our beautiful Ribeira.
The principal goal was to reclaim the street as a social and cultural space, where the community can gather, in spite of the widespread violence; therefore, we set up tables just outside of the Institute’s entrance, to provide a small gastronomic and musical banquet, accompanied by notes of the berimbau.
Due to a surprise downpour, we had to retreat back into the ICBIE and obviously we continued the party, also because the day coincided with the birthday of Pietro, the founder of the ICBIE.
And so, with pandiero beats, feet shuffling to the samba rhythms and showdowns during a Capoeira Roda, we had a beautiful evening, centered upon a spirit of sharing and the joy of being together. The plan is to transform “a rua é nossa” into a periodic ICBIE event.
