October and November 2018 at the ICBIE

The months of October and November at ICBIE were marked by a string of memorable activities, full of meaningful transformations.

The ICBIE Cinema-Debate, which started in October, saw the screening of films with powerful themes that were debated after each screening: fascism, racism, religious intolerance, racial segregation and depression, among others. Films such as “A onda” (The Wave), “Ele está de volta” (He’s Back), “Histórias cruzadas” (Crossed Stories) and “Precisamos falar sobre tudo” (We Have to Talk about Everything) were part of the program on Fridays starting at 7.00 pm at the Institute. It is worth pointing out that the film “Precisamos falar sobre tudo” saw the participation of the producers of this short documentary, Adriana Fernandes and Priscila Tambuque, who enriched the post-projection debate even more.

On October 20th we had a second lesson on the editorial board for the Enem (The Brazilian High School Equivalency exam) with professor Renato Dorea where the students of Colégio Estadual President Costa and Silva, the students of the Plataforma district and our students, were able to improve and resolve their last doubts .

To avoid leaving the month dedicated to breast cancer prevention to go blank, collaborator Meg Boaventura and Rosalucia Moccia organized a small lesson to celebrate the Pink October on the 27th of the same month. The Italian collaborator Rosalucia, led the lesson, bringing information on forms of prevention, symptoms, risk factors and statistical data, which were transmitted to those present in a dynamic and fun way.

In November we received visits that brought a lot of animation and new energy to the institute, including two successful actresses and long-standing friends of Pietro Gallina and Roy Zimmerman: Alessandra Vanzi, am Italian actress and journalist who was a protagonist in Rome’s theater scene starting from 1979, when she was a founding member of the legendary GAIA SCIENZA troupe. Branca Camargo, a Brazilian actress who studied in Rome at the Academy of Dramatic Arts, working in theater, cinema and TV. Despite their short stay, Alessandra Vanzi participated, together with Rosalucia Moccia and Meg Boaventura, in a small roundtable discussion at ABEAC, organized by one of our former students Fernando Bitencourt, with a presence of social workers of the association, to discuss issues related to the social question in Italy and in Brazil. Alessandra has also offered to publish an article in the Italian newspaper “Il Manifesto”, with photos of our introduction course to photography.

Directly from Michigan we received a fun and charismatic countryman and longtime friend of Roy Zimmerman: Carole Bleau, who is collaborating with the semester’s final English classes.

7For three days we had a visit by the American Jocelyn Blakely-Hill from Washington DC, who was recommended to us by Brian Stephenson, the leader of the Engineers Without Borders crew who visited the ICBIE in 2008.

The end of November was marked by the return of Rosalucia to Italy, after having been here for more than 60 days, actively participating in our activities and working of her Master’s thesis, which centers on the ICBIE. We are all happy to have strengthened our bonds of friendship and collaboration.

4a 3a Even the photography course has arrived at its end. The final conclusion is scheduled for December 7, 09, 15, when there will be an exhibition of the photos of the students in the ICBIE noble hall, open to the public.

And to close the month on a high note, the ICBIE participated in the “10th Exhibition of Art and Culture of Itapagipe”, which took place between November 21 and 25 in various associations of the Lower City. On November 23rd, the exhibition’s program took place in ICBIE with the dance presentation “Transmutações” (Transmutations), with inspired choreography by our dancers Talita Sueli and Luque Henry. After the dance, our multi-disciplinary artist Victor Vitória improvised a singing performance celebrating the month of the Black consciousness with the collaboration of Talita on the atabaque drum and Luque’s dancing.

5a 6aThe activities of 2018 are not yet completed: for the month of December we are preparing the programming of the VII EBM (Exposition-Bazaar and Music) and the Sixth Meeting of Italians, when we will count on the presence of our beloved singer Anna Clementi and the saxophonist Jan Rzeski.

The month of December also promises great emotions!
