BRAZILIAN POLITICS IN DEBATE AT THE ICBIE
The activities of the ICBIE are also running at full steam in this second quarter. Thanks to the collaboration between the ICBIE and our new friend Jacopo Bottacchi and through the mediation of Jean Jesus (one of our volunteers at the Institute), last Saturday (13/04) we held a round table on Brazilian politics from 2000 to the present day.
Jacopo, who is trained in Political Science in Italy, is doing his doctorate here in Brazil in several countries with the research “The Lament of the Sertão: the new centrality of the Northeast in Brazilian Politics”. Taking advantage of this opportunity, the Institute organized an open debate to the local community on the following topics: “Consensus building in the PT era” and “The crisis of consensus and the end of the progressive cycle”.
The meeting had a diiverse audience. The first part of the meeting dealt with the birth of the Workers’ Party (PT) and its evolution. The ideological and structural changes were highlighted by Jacopo, explaining how the historical moment influenced the dialogue with his voters.
The second part of the meeting discussed the way in which the PT had conducted its economic policy and the social impact caused by this choice. Immediately after the debate, the focus was on the transition of the Lula-Dilma government and the beginning of the second term of office of the President. The meeting ended with an interesting and participatory dialogue among those present and with the tasting of an apple pie with mango juice and coffee, prepared by our dear Marlene de Souza.
