The long-awaited eighth edition of the ICBIE EBM (Exposition, Bazaar and Music) was held on 30 November and 1 December, featuring a lot of music, partying, cheerfulness and painting. This year, the realization of the EBM had the financial support of the Fundação Gregório de Matos (FGM) through the project called Arte Todo Dia – Ano V of the City of Salvador. This allowed the realization of several workshops, in particular, introductions to singing, to wind instruments, to graffiti and to the elements of Afro dance. The workshops were held between 12 and 29 November at different times at the ICBIE headquarters.
The EBM began on the 30th with the inauguration of the art exhibition that this year hosted the 11th Itapagipe Art and Culture Exhibition, which the ICBIE has already supported for several years.
On Sunday, the event began at 2pm with live painting on the external wall of the ICBIE Leonardo da Vinci Library, the result of the introduction workshop on graffiti conducted by our dear partner Sagaz, who was able to count on the collaboration of the artist Pipino. Our social-ecological bazaar was opened at 4 pm with a workshop to recycle used clothing created by Cristina Cogi, also a longtime collaborator at our Institute. The results of the singing and wind instrument workshops were presented starting at 5 p.m. and the participants were able to show the audience a little of what they had learned during the meetings. The students of the singing workshop, led by Gessica Lima, presented solos, duets and a choir, while the students of the wind instrument workshop played three pieces, the Ode to Joy from the 9th Symphony of Beethoven, the American folksong ‘Aura Lee’ and a lively rendition of ‘Bella Ciao’, all masterfully directed by Roy Zimmerman. The performances amazed the whole audience for the quality achieved in such a short time of practice.
At 6.30 p.m., the musical acts began with the following order of presentation: Banda Varal de Cordel (a group exploring regional musical styles based upon dances of the North East such as baião, coco, xaxado); Bruno O Suspeito (a rapper who presented very clearly the reality of the local community); and MAVI (with a repertoire that touches on the great classics of Bahia such as Gilberto Gil and Edson Gomes, as well as his own music). These three groups were chosen through a competition promoted by the ICBIE to select music groups that would dialogue with the principles of the Institute. In fact, the choices were spot-on and wonderful!
Many things, right? But there’s more! To conclude the event, the ICBIE could not help but give space to both our home-grown group and a singer–we are talking about the group Banana Gourmet (born during the last edition of EBM) and our dear Victor Vittória (student and collaborator who makes the stage his home and always surprises us with his performances).
The ICBIE ends the activities of this year by thanking everyone immensely for all the support and loyalty of the public that always flatters us with its presence and participation, with thanks to our staff who with great passion make sure that this event and many others can be realized: all this is possible thanks to each of you, we wish you a great end of the year and wait for the next because we will still have many dreams and ideas!
