The ICBIE ended its twelfth academic year with a flurry of events centering upon the theme of Cinema and Music, another cycle in our work as an offical ‘Cultural Point’ sponsored by the State of Bahia. During the eleven-day period between December 7 and 17, six evenings were dedicated to the projection of films with musical subjects, three afternoon singing workshops, a long Saturday with our sixth annual ‘Exposition Bazaar and Music’ (EBM) and a lively closing Sunday dedicated to Salvador’s Italian community.
The film cycle alternated a mix of blockbusters (Amadeus, Moulin Rouge, Nashville) with unusual curiosities (Os Saltimbancos Trapalhões, Il Postino, Blaxploitalian) and each evening ended with an open discussion with the public. Every night attracted a different audience, from throngs of students from our friends at ABEAC to intimate gatherings of our students and friends, and to the happy Italian reunion.
The singing workshops represented a novelty that took advantage of the presence of the famous Italian singer Anna Clementi who kindly offered to host the third and final workshop. The first two afternoons were led by Pietro Gallina and Roy Zimmerman, with some fine voluntary support by the vocal coach Marcelo Jardim, and during the short cycle twenty aspiring singers enthusiastically participated.
On Saturday, December 16, came the sixth edition of the annual Exhibition, Bazaar and Music – EBM. Here is a description of the evening written by our wonderful Meg Boaventura:
This event was conceived by students of the institute in 2012, and its initial purpose was to promote young talented ICBIE students. Today the event extends to young people from all over the city of Salvador and its surroundings. And this year the event took place within the framework of the ICBIE project as Ribeira’s Culture Point.
This year’s exhibition was the theme “PretoNoBranco” of poems by the young poets Marjorie dos Anjos, Matheus Kawan and Lili Rubim. In it, poetry was laid out on the walls of the blue hall, printed on both black and white paper, creating a game of chess in the corridor where the lovers passed.
The charity bazaar was total success. With the philosophy of reusing and reducing consumerism, many people animated the space that was dedicated to the bazaar of the sixth EBM. The clothing, accessories and footwear were donated by ICBIE collaborators and friends and also brought from Europe, with good quality materials at affordable prices.
As for the music, the entertainment was entrusted to the young talents DJ Skull, followed by our EBM veteran Juliana Coelho who brought a lot of MPB, soon after, the Fit Dance group of ICTS NECAL, ICBIE partner, encouraged the audience with a lot of dance hits of the moment. The talented Victor Vitória performed in this edition of EBM, launching his song “No one is perfect”. Collaborator and dancer Talita Sueli performed a contemporary performance that left the public absorbed with such depth and transparency. After Talita, the group Estilo Livre, represented by Josemar Oliveira and Well Santiago, took over the galera with his Rap, with lyrics full of social criticism and activism, being followed in the same theme by Faustino Beats featuring DJ OnzeOnze. Henry Luque (our Luiz Henrique), also a student of the Institute, gave a show of talent with his own dance performance, in which he portrayed the intolerance of genres. To conclude, Victor Vitória returned to the stage bringing the microphone open with the moment “Show your Talent”. Where all the interested presents could sing, dance, improvise, declaim poetry and demonstrate any talent they had. The event ended around 10pm, with lots of smiling faces, lots of ideas and plans for next year. Until our Seventh Edition!
The Italian Day started with the Blaxploitalian film, a dramatic history of a century of abject racism in Italian cinema, which struck a sensitive cord for all the Italians living in this wonderful Afro-centric city. Then followed the annual presentation of the ICBIE ‘Leonardo Prizes,’ where locals are lauded for their contributions to our community; our ritual annual auction of wines; and culminating in a concert by Anna Clementi, in tandem with the American composer Laurie Schwartz.
Once again, the ICBIE showed its best, providing our community with cultural opportunities that brought many diverse people together. We look forward to doing an even better job in the year to come: our lucky thirteenth!
